The Big Chop

Robyn was still determined to compete in Iron Teen, despite the pesky little matter of the no hats rule. And despite the possibility that the sheriff and the MPs were onto them.

“We should’ve realized earlier,” Key said. “You can’t very well wear a beret in the competition. That would look strange.”

“You tried,” Tucker said. “That’s all you could do.”

“It’s not over,” Robyn blurted out. “We still have the contest. We still need to get to Castle District.”

Key glanced at her slantwise. “We can’t go back now. You introduced yourself to the sheriff.”

“It seemed like a good idea at the time,” Robyn mumbled. Now it seemed extra dumb. What had she been thinking?

“Surely we’re on camera, running around up in there, too,” Key added. “They’ll have a perfect image.”

“Scarlet looped the feed,” Robyn said. “How good are security camera images usually anyway?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Key said. “There’s no way you can go unnoticed with that hairstyle.”

“I could try to braid it differently.” Any kind of braid might draw attention to her, though. She had seen Mallet face-to-face twice now—the beret and glasses had let her get away with it today, but she didn’t trust the subtlety of different braid styles.

“Or wear it down,” Laurel suggested.

Robyn shot her a look. “Not likely.”

Key shrugged. “What? It’s probably cute. Super curly, right?”

That was the understatement of the hour. “It’s enormous. It would literally get in my way.”

“Bun. Knot. Updo. Ponytail?” Laurel chanted.

Robyn shook her head. The younger girl’s hair hung like straw. She didn’t get it.

“So we call it quits,” Key confirmed. “Put our energies elsewhere.”

Robyn twirled the end of her braid in her fingers. Unless . . .
